Shireen Knowles

Shireen Knowles brings more than 25 years of health care experience to her legal practice, drawing on her background as an attorney, nurse practitioner, registered nurse, compliance professional, and health care operations leader. Her practice is focused on health law, regulatory compliance, provider operations, and the practical legal issues that arise across the health care delivery system.

Before practicing law, Shireen built a substantial clinical and administrative career in health care. She remains licensed and in good standing as a nurse practitioner and registered nurse, giving her a firsthand understanding of the clinical, operational, and compliance challenges faced by providers and suppliers. Her experience spans rural and urban health care settings, including inpatient medical and surgical hospitals, ambulatory surgical centers, home health, hospice, skilled nursing facilities, assisted living facilities, medical research, quality improvement, billing and coding, and compliance operations.

Shireen practiced for 15 years as a nurse practitioner, focusing on orthopedics, interventional spine care, and neuropathic conditions. She managed complex patients in both ambulatory and hospital settings and worked closely with physicians, clinical teams, administrators, and payors. This experience gives her a practical understanding of how clinical care, documentation, and reimbursement requirements intersect. She also participated in research involving medical products seeking FDA approval.

She also held administrative and compliance roles for more than a decade, including as a compliance coordinator and OSHA compliance officer across multiple states. Her work included regulatory compliance, policy development, documentation review, quality improvement, and oversight of billing and coding processes. Through these roles, she developed firsthand insight into how compliance programs operate in practice, including audit readiness and documentation integrity. She was recognized for excellence and named Employee of the Year by a multistate health care organization.

Shireen’s combined legal, clinical, and compliance experience enables her to provide practical, operational legal guidance. She helps providers apply complex regulatory requirements in real-world settings, with a focus on documentation, reimbursement, licensure, and day-to-day compliance.

Shireen earned her Juris Doctor, cum laude, and a Health Law Certificate from Loyola University New Orleans College of Law. During law school, she was recognized for academic excellence, inducted into Alpha Sigma Nu and Phi Delta Phi, and honored for her achievements in Elder and Disability Law. She earned her master’s degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, with dual preparation as a Palliative Care Primary Nurse Practitioner and Family Nurse Practitioner, and earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of South Alabama.
